My Show House Show Down Experience
Show House Show Down was a wonderful experience and I was honoured to be chosen as one of the designers to take part in the series for TV3 by Visual Independent Productions. The property I was given was a Penthouse on the Malahide Rd from Shannon Homes with a budget of 16K. The client brief was to design a show house for two business professionals for the mid to high rental market.
My aim was to create a stylish contemporary space designed specifically towards the clients brief of two business professionals. My inspiration came from the stunning coastal views from the penthouse and my colour scheme was based on the coastal landscape with blues, greens, and yellow against a grey backdrop. Texture was another important element in my design to ensure it had depth and substance.
The Design Appraisal with Neville and Laurence went very well and they were very impressed with my sophisticated design, especially my choice of window treatments, headboards and my innovative splash back.
My Hallway makes a great first impression and comprises of contemporary paneling painted in ‘silver moonlight’ and paired with stunning metallic geometric feature wallpaper.
As it was a penthouse I wanted to maximise every inch of space. From the onset I wanted to include an office space but I didn’t want to sacrifice a bedroom to do it. I therefore decided to transform one of the closets in the hall into a ‘office snug’ which was a real hit with the public as they thought it was a very clever idea, especially for the business professional who might work from home once or twice a week.
The penthouse interior contains a relaxing open plan living space with double height ceilings and stunning views of the coastline so I wanted to emphasize the height of the room in my design and chose a wave pleat window treatment that hung high above the windows and drew the eye upwards.
I also created a cosy modular corner sofa in this space that faced the views and I customized this with my own designer scatter cushions to add texture and colour to my scheme. This seating design won ‘Best Feature’ in the Show House Show Down.
With the penthouse, I inherited the kitchen units so for me it was important that I added another design element with my feature splash back from our corporate members BTW in Naas. I mixed two colours with décor tiles in an elongated hexagon pattern to create a contemporary pattern.
My dining table was elegant and relaxing with coastal elements.
The Master Bedroom is a relaxing retreat perfect for the busy professional and features one of my bespoke opulent headboards from ‘Perfect Headboards’ and a custom bed end bench. It also has luxurious contemporary damask wallpaper and handmade curtains with trimming.
For the box room, I created a beautiful relaxing guest bedroom. Taking into account that I had already created a home office in the hall area I felt a guest bedroom was the best use of space for two busy professionals. This bedroom contains a bespoke headboard and made to order bed base with storage drawers from my sister company Perfect Headboards. Luxurious curtains and blinds with coordinating trim is another feature of this room.
I also designed a third bedroom which once again took inspiration from the coastal landscape.
Finally it was time for the target market to come and vote.
The votes were cast and counted and despite tough competition I won across all 3 categories for ‘Best use of Colour’, overall ‘Favourite Item’ and the main award of ‘Winner of Show House Show Down’. I was delighted with the results and am looking forward to working on more Show Houses in the near future.
Massive thanks to the management, staff and tradesmen of Shannon Homes as they were exceptional to work with and shared my vision of creating a high-quality show house.
