1) Texture

Texture is the main component in interiors for 2017 so make sure to add plenty to your schemes. Use rich opulent velvet for upholstered headboards and sofas. Layer with knitted chunky cushions, fur or wool throws and flocked fabrics.

2) Colour

We will see plenty of Navy and Denim Blue this 2017 as these moody blues take centre stage.

As Pantone announce ‘Greenery’ as their colour of the year, we will see green emerge in home furnishings, from sage green to emerald you can’t go wrong.  Mix moss greens with terracotta and botanical prints for a fresh earthy interior.

3) Statement Lighting

We all love feature lighting and what better way than a wow centre pendant. Think quirky pieces in black and gold or bronze statement pendants. Here are some of my favourite light fittings for 2017.

4) Smarter Furniture

Through out 2017 we will see the move towards smarter functional furniture and appliances as we choose items that work around us and our busy lives. For example this down draft hood ideal for islands from Miele is retractable so it gives a concealed look when not in use.

5) Marble

Another big trend for 2017 is Marble as it makes its mark throughout all aspects of interiors as it dominates kitchens and bathrooms. However it doesn’t have to be overly expensive, like this stunning waterfall island counter top from a new range of Tuscany quartz by SM Quartz designed to replicate unique Italian marble such as as carrara marble and makes an enviable statement on this island.

Marble won’t just be for floors and islands. It will also be found on wall coverings and fabrics which links to the textured trend I mentioned earlier. The advantage of hanging art in kitchens is that it allows you to be as fun and creative as you like and set the tone for your home. Tips about placement?

When it comes to placement of artwork in a kitchen there are many areas which you can utilise depending on the size of your artwork and your kitchen layout. Here are a few ideas for placement:-

1)      Using the free wall alongside a dining table can create a real impact for a large piece of artwork or picture gallery. Make sure to hang your artwork high enough so that people won’t be sitting against them.

Colour

When choosing your art work it’s important that you consider the colour scheme of your kitchen as a whole. Things to consider are your curtain, blind and upholstery fabrics, your paint colour, the colour of your cabinets and your flooring. There are many Irish artists who would be happy to commission a piece using your selected paint colours. This is a great way to create the style of art that suits your home and the atmosphere you want to achieve.

There are many different styles of art that you could consider for a kitchen area. Take into consideration the location and style of your home. For example a coastal home could look fantastic with a large seascape. Food lovers may like to use food photography and young families may like to display their childrens artwork. Whilst funky retro homes may like to use pop art to express their personality and add fun to the space.

Frames

When choosing your frames take into account your existing colour scheme e.g. the colour of your appliances or cabinet handles may help determine the colour of the frame you choose e.g. chrome, black, etc. Likewise the colour of your kitchen cabinets could help determine the colour of the mounts you use within the frame. If creating a picture gallery consider using frames of the same colour to create unity and allow the artwork to shine.

Anything else readers should know about hanging art in the kitchen?

If your artwork is precious or of great value then I would suggest that you display the pieces away from the hob and sink to be mindful of temperature changes. High quality frames may help preserve your artwork.

Continue the tones of your artwork into your kitchen accessories e.g. small appliances, placemats, napkins, vase of flowers etc

Lastly if you don’t have any paintings or prints remember that artwork for kitchens can come in many forms e.g. a stunning extractor hood, good lighting design and bespoke flooring can also create an artistic statement in a kitchen.

Kitchen Colours

Grey will still be a hot colour for kitchens in 2014 and is a great neutral colour. Theme is with natural lighting and warm hues for a cosy look. To add depth you could consider using mixed materials.

Denim blue is also a popular colour choice for painted units this year. It looks great with natural wood, exposed  brick and stainless steel finishes.

Extending the Backsplash

For 2014 we will see more extended back splash’s which extend up to ceiling height. This will be coupled with glass front cabinets or open shelving.

We’ll also see fun patterned back-splashes…think Moroccan, Turkish etc to create a cheery back-splash.

Copper

Copper is also on trend for 2014 and this warm metal has made a big come back. Consider adding it in accessories such as small appliances, cutlery, saucepans etc and theme it with a copper pendant for an on trend look.

Kitchen Flooring

We’ll also see a trend for matching floor and wall tiles to create a streamlined look. This works best with large rectangular tiles and has the added bonus of making your kitchen look even bigger. As rustic timber and natural wood is on trend I’d also expect to see wood effect tiles like these herringbone style floor tiles.

Open shelving will be popular for 2014 . This looks great here with this stunning kitchen from LOMI Design. All things natural is a big trend for 2014 and we’ll see lots of natural timbers in our kitchens this year.

Rounded Cabinetry

We’ll also see more Rounded Cabinetry in our kitchens this year. These curves will help create a softer look in your kitchen design.

Worktops

We will see a shift from granite worktops towards synthetic materials that are more durable and child friendly e.g. caesar stone and zodiaq. Quartz in its many options will be a big player this year as its durability and natural look will make it a popular choice.

Kitchen / Diner Hub

The open plan kitchen/diner is here to stay and we’ll see more blend-in dining sets where the dining table is in the same finish and materials as the kitchen units to create a cohesive kitchen interior.
